Advocacy, Research & Policy Work EPIC’s Advocacy, Research and Policy Work promote solution-focused strategies and policies that support genuine peacebuilding in Iraq. In 2003, we established the following six essential goals for building peace in Iraq: • Improve the protection of civilians and human rights To learn how these goals continue to organize our work today, check out EPIC's Strategic Plan for 2007. Iraq Peace & Development Working Group (IPDWG)EPIC co-chairs the Iraq Peace and Development Working Group (IPDWG), a community of more than 50 NGOs advocating changes in U.S. policy to reduce suffering and conflict in Iraq. Initiated by EPIC in December 2006, the group gathers regularly to share information and coordinate strategy. If you represent an organization and would like to find out how to join IPDWG, contact EPIC at info(at)epic-usa.org.
EPIC’s Educational Programs play a unique role in providing a human and historical context for the debate over Iraq, helping Americans understand what’s really happening inside Iraq. We utilize educational and outreach opportunities to create common understanding between Americans and Iraqis. The Ground Truth ProjectThe Ground Truth Project and series of interviews offer unique perspectives from Iraqis, aid workers, returning soldiers, and others who have lived, worked or served in Iraq. The Ground Truth Project provides Americans with unique access to first-hand accounts of the daily realities of life in Iraq. EPIC hopes these interviews will inspire meaningful policy change and citizen action in support of a better future for all Iraqis. FACES of Iraq Photo ExhibitionFACES of Iraq tells the stories of the Iraqi people who, by accident of geography, are coping with unimaginable hardships brought on by years of war and political oppression. This traveling photo exhibit is composed of fifty color and black-and-white prints, showcasing the work of nine photographers. The images capture the struggles and triumphs of Iraqi families caught up in extraordinary circumstances. The FACES of Iraq exhibit is a unique and powerful way to connect the American public to the people and experiences of Iraq. Iraq Speakers BureauThe Iraq Speakers Bureau is an educational resource that provides knowledgeable scholars, policy professionals, journalists, NGO representatives, aid workers, military professionals, and respected Iraqis and veterans to venues in the U.S. and Canada. Experts provide critical analysis of humanitarian conditions and human rights in Iraq, regional conditions and historical trends, and other crucial issues. Through acclaimed educational forums, exhibits and films, EPIC speakers take you beyond the headlines to challenge, imagine and enable innovative solutions to the greatest problems facing the Iraqi people today. Bring a speaker to your community.
Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC)EPIC joined with CIVIC in April 2007 to help generate support for the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act (S.594), legislation introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein (CA), Patrick Leahy (VT), Bernie Sanders (VT) and Barbara Mikulski (MD) that limits the use, sale and transfer of these weapons to protect civilian lives. Founded by the late Marla Ruzicka, CIVIC advocates on behalf of victims of armed conflict, working to ensure they receive recognition and assistance from warring parties. EPIC continues to work closely with CIVIC to advocate for 100,000s of Iraqi families affect by the war. Refugees International (RI)Refugees International has called Iraq the “world’s fastest growing refugee crisis.” Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have fled to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, contributing to the spread of instability and conflict that threatens the entire region. EPIC works with RI to help bring national attention to this growing humanitarian emergency. Founded in 1979, RI generates lifesaving humanitarian assistance and protection for displaced people around the world and works to end the conditions that create displacement.
