Torture Is Simply Wrong, And You Don't Have To Be A Liberal To Think So By John Reinke In his letter to the Seattle Times of July 9 advocating torture, Scott Eiler implies that only "hard-core liberals" would oppose its use. This is not the case. In a recent article in the Washington Post entitled "The Stain of Torture", Burton J. Lee III, the personal physician of President George H.W. Bush, stated the following: "Our medical code of ethics requires us to oppose torture wherever it is inflicted, for any reason. Guided by this ethic, I served as a volunteer with the international group MEDICO in 1963, taking care of people who had been tortured by the French during Algeria's civil war. I remain deeply afffected by that experience today -- by the people I tried to help and could not, and by their families, which suffered the most terrible grief." I agree with these statements made by President George W. Bush on June 26, 2003: "Freedom from torture is an inalienable human right," and "Torture anywhere is an affront to human dignity everywhere." Torture is simply wrong - and you don't have to be a liberal to think so. John Reinke is a member of EPIC's Board of Directors. |
