In the world we live in today, acts of war and violence are seen as forces of change. Far too often, peace is portrayed as passive inaction. Why do we look at peacebuilding like this when it requires just as much, if not more, effort? Peace is a goal that requires action, not complacency. Humanitarian aid and diplomacy are the building blocks that move societies towards stable, long-term peace. We want to reclaim the term peace and get rid of the inactive connotations that go along with it. Therefore, we cordially invite you to join our summer of peace.
If you’ve been following our updates, you know that the past few months in Iraq have been far from peaceful. Car bombings and other forms of sectarian violence have been shaking the country. Here at EPIC, we advocate for American leadership to help improve the situation in Iraq and put an end to the violence. In order to do that, we need to show the Obama administration that Americans are serious about a future for Iraqis that doesn’t include violence. We are declaring this a summer of peace, and there are many ways you can help make this declaration a reality.
Most importantly, if you haven’t yet, sign our petition on Change.org. We are petitioning the administration to put Iraq back on the agenda because it clearly hasn’t been in recent history. It took Obama 120 days into his second term to mention Iraq. We need to make this his priority.
In order to get our petition more exposure, share it with your friends on social media. Facebook, Twitter, and other social channels are ideal methods. We are also implementing a Thunderclap to make this easier. A Thunderclap encourages supporters to donate a Facebook status or a Tweet to the cause. Joining a Thunderclap means that everyone who signs onto it will have a status released at the same time, multiplying his or her impact and reaching a larger audience all at once. Our Thunderclap is set to go on July 10th and we need to reach 100 supporters by this time in order for the message to launch. Please join our Thunderclap so that our petition gets the most amount of exposure and signatures as possible. This will ensure that the Obama administration will not be able to stand idly by as Iraqis suffer from the violent scene that we left behind.
Use social media. Use word of mouth. Tell your networks any way you can. You can make this a summer of peace.
